CURICULUM VITAE
Tom has spent a lifetime around boats, by age 7 he mastered water skis, at age
11 he built his first boat with the help of an uncle ( a 10 ft hydroplane).
Throughout the teen and adult years Tom has purchased and rehabilitated boats.
Before becoming a full time surveyor Tom served in the Navy as a navigator
(quartermaster) and had career as a Merchant Marine, serving on Pilot Vessels,
Rocket Recovery Vessels, Tug and Tanker Barges, and Ships. The last 12 years
were spent with Maersk Lines as Chief Mate & Master. Tom prepared shipyard work
packages & approved the completed work. Tom was also involved in writing
procedures for ISO/ISM. According to Ian Nicolson (one of the worlds authorities
on marine surveying) the number one quality of a good surveyor is time at sea.
Tom has crossed all oceans at least once, and the Atlantic 13 times, the Pacific
5 times. As a surveyor it is hard to pigeonhole Tom into a specialty area, his
experience and knowledge is well rounded. Tom enjoys surveying sailboats,
powerboats, mega yachts, and ships equally.
Capt. Tom Martin: -- Tom
was recruited by home land security but remains available for consultations.
As a Sea Scout Capt. Tom had his
first sailing adventures on a converted wooden Captains launch on the Delaware
River. Of course we kids spent more time repairing the boat then sailing it.
The beginnings of a lifelong accumulation of both sailing and maintenance
skills.
Capt.
Tom has owned both wood and fiberglass boats of dingy to ocean crossing size. He
has worked in sailboat construction for Morgan and Irwin sailboat companies.
While cruising for extended periods of time he has paused to restore his
dwindling cash reserves and worked at boat yards in repair and painted his share
of boat bottoms. Capt. Tom had been a live a board for over nineteen years on
his Morgan 28 foot sloop. His second job as a license Captain was teaching for
Annapolis Sailing School where his work took him for over a five year period to
sail the Chesapeake Bay, Florida Keys, Tampa Bay and Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean
Sea out of St. Croix USVI and Pacific Ocean out of San Diego. For a two year
period he managed the St. Croix branch which challenged his maintenance skills
trying to keep seven large sailboats and five smaller working during the season.
Capt. Tom is an ASA certified instructor for small boats, large and cruising
sailboats. After a spell of working as a tour boat Captain and private yacht
Captain Capt. Tom started his own Marine Service business. This opportunity
allowed him to expand his skills in both motor and sail. Aside from delivering
dozens of boats to both coast and Caribbean Sea and South America Capt. Tom has
managed many for absentee owners for some eleven years. A short list; CSY 44,
Gulfstar 46, Tartan 40 Toc, 54 Irwin 2x, 41 & 51 Morgan OI, 38 Morgan,
37 ODay, 46 & 39 Jeaneau, 36 Gulfstar, 44 and 50 Shannon.
