Calahan & Co. is truly one of the few firms qualified to perform Mega Yacht surveys.   Mega yachts are blue water vessels and expected to cross oceans, the surveyor of choice will have many years of experience making ocean transits.  Tom Calahan, our senior surveyor is that surveyor. (see Curriculum Vitae, below).

Our surveys are conducted in accordance with the appropriate standards for the vessel, as many such vessels carry Class Certificates. This means that your Yacht will not be held to standards which do not apply to the vessel.

Services offered to Mega Yachts

We provide all types surveys required by Mega Yacht owners and operators, including pre-purchase, insurance renewal, damage surveys, transit surveys and ultra sound testing (of aluminum & steel Hulls).

Other services offered to Mega Yacht owners include, refit & shipyard supervision, captain & crew for delivery voyages, Flagging & documentation under most Caribbean States and voyage planning.

CURICULUM VITAE

 CAPT. TOM CALAHAN

Tom Calahan has spent a lifetime around boats, by age 7 he mastered water skis, at age 11 he built his first boat with the help of an uncle ( a 10 ft hydroplane).  Throughout the teen and adult years Tom has purchased and rehabilitated boats.  Before becoming a full time surveyor Tom served in the Navy as a navigator (quartermaster) and had career as a Merchant Marine, serving on Pilot Vessels, Rocket Recovery Vessels, Tug and Tanker Barges, and Ships. The last 12 years were spent with Maersk Lines as Chief Mate & Master.  Tom prepared shipyard work packages & approved the completed work.  Tom was also involved in writing procedures for ISO/ISM.  According to Ian Nicolson (one of the worlds authorities on marine surveying) the number one quality of a good surveyor is time at sea.  Tom has crossed all oceans at least once, and the Atlantic 13 times, the Pacific 5 times.    As a surveyor it is hard to pigeonhole Tom into a specialty area, his experience and knowledge is well rounded.  Tom enjoys surveying sailboats, powerboats, mega yachts, tugs, barges, and ships equally.
